Flock Profile Series: Meet Chuck! Barred Rock Rooster Ambassador

Chuck Finley is a 4-year-old barred rock rooster living in the Midwest on a small micro homestead with a mixed flock of egg layers, pest control chickens, and companionship chickens. Chuck is a rooster ambassador demonstrating through his refined manners and excellent flock protection skills that with the right environment, heritage, and positively motivated training that roosters can be a peaceful and productive addition to your backyard flock.

Barred Rocks also known as Barred Plymouth Rocks are a low maintenance, beginner friendly, all-around amazing backyard chicken breed. They are a dual-purpose breed meaning they can be raised for both meat and eggs. A female barred rock hen when given the proper environment and nutritional support she needs can lay 250 brown eggs per year. You can recognize a Barred Rock by their distinctive black and white barred feathers, bright red single combs, and clean legs. When provided with a safe, clean, proper environment and support Barred Rocks can endure a variety of weather extremes from sweltering summers to frigid winters. Barred Rocks are docile, friendly, social, and highly intelligent.

Barred Rocks as a breed have a rich history dating back to the 1800s in New England. They were originally bred from a line of Dominique chickens and Black Javas creating the Barred Rock breed. In 1849 they debuted at a national poultry show in Boston and quickly grew in popularity for their beautiful sleek appearance and ability to withstand the rigors of farm life. They’re an ideal breed for beginners, families, and homesteaders.

Adopting Chuck was one of the most enlightening and humbling experiences of my life. As a new homesteader I was woefully ignorant about what I needed to do to set my rooster up for success and I made many preventable beginner mistakes. After learning, growing, and understanding the changes I needed to make to help Chuck succeed in my flock, the difference in his behavior was night and day. Chuck taught me that everything I had been told about roosters was wrong, and it left me forever changed.

I created two videos all about working with your backyard rooster to create the best possible homesteading outcomes for both of you.
