October Chicks, Introducing New Breeds To Our Flock

For a variety of reasons but mostly scheduling this year we are introducing October chicks to our flock. I felt comfortable attempting this since we are two years into our homestead journey and our chicken infrastructure is well developed and weather proof. I have to say though, never again for me. If we have the chance to have chicks in the future I will definitely only do so in the spring season. While this might be a good decision for some situations, the weather where we live really adds an additional challenge when preparing small chicks to join the flock once they are 10 weeks old and fully feathered, ready to be outside. I wanted to share the breeds we are introducing and why we chose them.

Dominique-We have 3 Dominique girls joining our backyard flock lineup. They are Patty, Laverne, and Maxene. We named them after the Andrews Sisters. We chose this breed because actually, our OG 3 were supposed to be Dominiques and were Barred rocks instead (no regrets! I absolutely love my Barred rocks). They’re a lovely dual purpose bird with a rose comb which is ideal considering our harsh winters.

Comet-We have Cinnamon who is a Comet. My mom actually has this breed in her flock and I thought they were so beautiful I wanted to add them to mine too! They are a lovely red dual purpose bird with high egg production.

Buff laced polish-We have Cynthia, who will be a lovely lady companion to our Buff laced polish rooster Paul. Although they are an ornamental breed our current polish chickens have done well in our environment which I credit to our well constructed coop and run which offers them adequate protection and warmth in the winter.

Bantam barred rocks-And last but absolutely not least we are adding two bantams to our bantam bunch, Half moon and Short bread. I named all my bantam chickens after cookies so continuing that theme. Barred rocks whatever size have thrived in our backyard environment and these girls will make an amazing addition to the flock. Though lower on egg production, they will still lay beautiful brown mini eggs and be excellent companion birds.

Looking forward to sharing more pictures and information as our new girls grow and thrive! Questions about these chicken breeds, homesteading, or backyard chickens? Head over to our YouTube channel and leave your questions in the comments!
