What are chickens to you?

Chickens are so many different things to different people. I came up with a few categories recently, by no means an all inclusive list. Chickens are: egg layers, meat birds, pets, therapy animals, meant to be in the backyard, travel adventure companions, nuggets, livestock, coworkers, friends, children, and important. Chickens are part of our heritage as a nation. Chickens have been and are essential to the health of our world. Anyone you ask may have a different opinion about what chickens are and what role they play in our lives. It is fascinating to me how many varied and complex roles this animal plays in our families and in our society. As more people become attracted to the hobby and lifestyle of backyard chicken keeping I’m in awe of the unifying power of chickens. When we talk about our flocks, we can leave behind our differences and concentrate on the things we share: a love of our birds. In a world where there is no shortage of things that are meant to divide and stratify us I’m so grateful for my flock. I’m grateful not only for the amazing things they do every day to feed and amuse my family but I’m also so grateful for the amazing connections they have helped me form.

P.S. Many places around the nation are experiencing above average temperatures. Please take the extra measures to keep your flock cool and safe. I shared ways to keep chickens cool in a previous post and a plethora of other resources and ideas exist online. Keep your chickens cool and safe everyone!
