Easy ways to use ice to keep your chickens cool in the heat!
1. Frozen treats in ice cubes. Freeze pieces of fruit, vegetables, and meal worms in ice cubes for your chickens. It is a snack and enrichment!
2. Blocks of ice or ice cubes in their regular water dispenser. Freeze water in Tupperware-like containers (old butter containers, whipped topping tubs, etc.) and add these to your chicken’s water. Leave the ice in the sun for a few minutes and the forms slide right out.
3. Frozen Ice around the coop and run. Use these same blocks of ice (in their containers so they don’t create water mess), frozen milk jugs, or frozen plastic soda bottles and place them around your coop and run. Once they trust this new item chickens can perch, peck, and lay on the ice forms to cool down.
4. Fill a livestock dish with ice cubes, Gatorade, and mealworms. This is a special treat I make for my girls and they go nuts for it. The correct dilution of Gatorade for chickens is in my first-aid post. *Full Flavor Gatorade NOT Sugar Free or Diet!* This is a great way to get hydration into your chickens on very hot summer days. You can also add hydration packets like Sav-A-Chick, follow the instructions on the back of the packet.
