Having chickens has made me a healthier person in so many ways. My chickens provide an amazing food source via their eggs for my family which has allowed us to eat better than we ever have. In addition to their utilization as a source of food, caring for chickens has been good for my mental health. As someone who thrives in a routine, daily chores have provided my day with wonderful structure which I directly benefit from. My chickens provide me with an excuse to be outside daily which compels movement and exercise even on days when I don’t feel like it. I often describe watching my chickens as a form of meditation. Seated on the back porch staring out at them enjoying the backyard is truly one of my happy places where I can let my mind just observe them with wonder and be free of the worries of the world at least for a little while. I enjoy them endlessly as pets for their bright, vibrant, and distinct personalities. Every member of the flock brings something different to the yard. I’m excited everyday to wake up and let them out into their run and into the world to see what new things there are to scratch, peck, and explore. Interacting with them and nurturing them brings me pure happiness that I have found nowhere else.
