I provide my chickens oyster shells and grit year round.

I provide my chickens with calcium (oyster shells) and grit supplements in their run area. While my backyard chickens can free range in their protected area most of the year, I still provide these supplements year round to ensure they’re as healthy as possible. Chickens don’t chew their food and instead process their food in their gizzard. Grit is an important part of this process as it helps chickens break down their food efficiently so they can access all of the nutrients. I provide my chickens with extra calcium via oyster shells. I also occasionally feed them their own shells that have been baked and crushed. I keep these supplements separate from their food and treats in a dedicated feeder to prevent spoilage.
