I highly recommend having dedicated chicken area (coop and run) shoes and boots. It seems like such a simple thing but it can go a long way to keep you, your family, and your chickens healthy. My husband and I both have several pairs of dedicated farm shoes and boots. We never wear these shoes to drive places, never wear them in public, and they don’t make it off the carpet in the entry way. Having shoes dedicated to your farm and chicken areas specifically keeps you from spreading germs from the outside world to your birds. Likewise, it keeps any germs from your own farm from being spread all over your home. I don’t let visitors walk through my coop or run. It may seem like a small and possibly eccentric habit but I’m convinced this extra step has contributed to helping keep my chickens healthy and happy.
